USEFUL INFORMATION
There are no health risks and no vaccinations are required for Mauritius unless travelers are from an endemic region. Mauritius is four hours ahead of GMT and two hours ahead of South African standard time, however due to Daylight saving, from the end of October to the end of March; Mauritius is five hours ahead of GMT and three hours ahead of standard South African time.
The local currency in Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee - it is recommended to travel with Rupees, Euros or US Dollars. Most credit cards are accepted by banks, most hotels and restaurants and tourist shops.
Generally shops open from 08h00-17h00 Monday to Fridays, 09h00-13h00 on Saturdays and 09h00-12h00 on Sundays. Banking hours are Monday-Thursday 09h15-15h15, Friday 09h15-17h15 and Saturdays 09h30-11h30.
Electricity is 220 Volts AC using square 3 pin plugs.
South African passport holders do not require a visa for travel into Mauritius. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months from return date and have at least 3 blank pages.
English is widely spoken and is the official language in Mauritius, however French, Creole and Hindi are frequently used.
The dress code for Mauritius is defiantly beach and casual wear. It is recommended that in winter you should travel with light woolen items of clothing as evenings can get cool.
When visiting religious places, please respect the cultures and dress modestly and appropriately.

The North:
Grand Baie is literally a shopper's paradise, which also has an exciting night-life with a variety of restaurants, bars and discos.
The Triolet Shivala
The largest Hindu temple on the island which was built in 1809 in honour of several Hindu gods.

The East

The South East
Dutch Ruins:- discover ruins of the first Dutch settlements, where excavation is ongoing with hope of uncovering important Mauritian history.
La Vanilla Reserve des Mascareigenes
Where visitors will find 500 giant tortoises and Nile crocodles roaming freely, as well as a diverse mix of fuana and flora, an insectarium boasting 20,000 species of insects including butterflies from different regions of the world. Also the Crocodile Affeme offers local cuisine and for the more adventurous lovers of fine food, a specialty of crocodile meat.
The West
Martello Towers which represent the early rivalry between old colonial powers. The towers are a milestone in the island's history symbolising the end of slavery and the beginning the Indian immigration.
Chamarel
Discover a landscape of contrasting shades and colours, blues, greens, reds and yellows as a result of the volcanic erosion. The rare of beauty of the neighbouring waterfalls of Chamarel rise above the native plant life and moors.
Salt Pans in Tamarin are the heart of salt production in Mauritius due to the high amount of sunshine that this region receives.
Casela stretches over 25 hectres and is situated in the Rivière Noire district. The bird park stretches boasts more than 140 bird species from all five continents and include other attractions such as fish ponds, tigers, tortoises, monkeys, deer and orchids.
The Yemen Reserve may not be the largest game reserve on the island, but there is still a lot to see. Get close to the herds of deer, as well as explore species of the Mauritian fauna. Rustic kiosks in the reserve award visitors unobstructed views of the sea where you can relax and sip on local punch as the sun sets.

Tea Route & Bois Cheri

CLIMATE
Mauritius is a year round destination with a tropical climate. Cool and dry winter months are between May to October, temperatures peak at 24°C. Mauritian summer months are from November to April and are hot, humid and rainy. Mauritius is affected by tropical cyclones during December to February. The West Coast is the best region of the island in terms of weather, where it is warm and sunny for most of the year.
