Cape Town is the capital of the Western Province, situated on the south, west Coast of South Africa. Known as the "Mother City", it is the oldest city in South Africa. It also has the top five national attractions in South Africa that should appear on every visitor's itinerary all year round. The South African currency is Rands and cents. Foreign currency can be exchanged at any bank or foreign exchange outlet. Most stores, restaurants and hotels accept credit cards. Banking hours are 09h00 - 15h30 Monday - Friday and Saturdays 08h30 - 11h00. Cape Town is a clean and safe area - there are no health risks and no vaccinations are required. Tap water is safe to drink and there is no risk of contracting malaria. Cape Town is busiest during December and January when local schools are on holiday, although the tourist season extends from November to April.
ATTRACTIONS
Table Mountain - a world famous landmark. The top of the mountain can be reached via cable car or for the more energetic, there are a number of paths up the mountain. From the top (on a clear day) you can enjoy magnificent views over Cape Town.
Robben Island - This prison was once home to many black political freedom fighters including Mr Nelson Mandela. The island can be reached by ferry, it is situated 12km from Table Bay. V&A Waterfront - This working harbour hosts many restaurants, retail stores, craft stalls, etc. and is an ideal spot for entertainment, shopping and dining. Cape Point - Cape Point situated within the Table Mountain National Park is where you will find cliffs forming the southern most tip of Africa. Table Mountain National Park hosts a variety of animals and is an ideal place for a scenic drive. Boulders Penguin Colony - This is home to the vulnerable African penguin, here you can view them in their natural habitat. Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens - These gardens are a must see to enjoy South African flora, it showcases only indigenous South African plants and is an ideal place for a picnic or walk through the tranquil gardens. Cape Winelands - The Western Cape is famous for it's wine estates and wine tours are a must when visiting the region. These tours to regions such as Stellenbosch, and Franschoek offer fantastic scenery, outdoor activities, award winning restaurants and of course some incredible wine tasting. Castle of Good Hope - Constructed between 1666 and 1679, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest building in South Africa. Inside the walls of the pentagon shaped castle you will find a combination of cultural and military history dating back to the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck to the Cape in 1652. CLIMATE
Cape Town rests between the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, and as a result enjoys mild winters and warm summers. In summer (December - February) you're looking at pleasant 15°C at night then rising to a comfortable 27°C by day. Winter is the rainy season,. However rainfall is moderate throughout the year and there are refreshing sea breezes which can sometimes turn a little bracing during the winter. |
