Durban, the capital of Kwazulu Natal, is a cosmopolitan city which is home to Africa's busiest and best managed port. The South African currency is Rands and cents. Foreign currency can be exchanged at any bank or foreign exchange outlet. Most stores, restaurants and hotels accept credit cards. Banking hours are 09h00 - 15h3 Monday - Friday and Saturdays 08h30 - 11h00. On arrival at the airport, shuttle companies offer transfers to your required destination and taxi's are available. Taxi's are also available from all major hotels. Car rental is also a good option to get around the city. The same standard voltage and frequency as in most European countries, 220/230 Volts at 50Hz even though the type of plugs varies. You can usually borrow an adapter at your hotel. It is normal to tip golf caddies, taxi drivers, hotel and railway porters, chambermaids, stewards, waiters, barmen and tour guides. The accepted average is 10-15%. ATTRACTIONS
Ushaka Marine World - a world-class entertainment and tourism destination. At the end of Durban's Golden Mile is the beginning of uShaka Marine World - uShaka Marine World is Africa's largest Marine Theme park. It offers an aquarium, wet n wild world with rides for the whole family, snorkelling with an array of fish including sharks and much more. Natal Sharks Board - The only organisation of its kind in the world, the Natal Sharks Board protects beach users in Kwazulu Natal against shark attacks with an extensive and effective network of shark nets that extend along 320 kilometres of coastline. You can learn more about sharks and the Natal Sharks Board by visiting the complex in Umhlanga Rocks. Highlights of the visit include a display hall with lifelike replicas of sharks, fish and rays, an audio-visual presentation on the day-to-day work that the Natal Sharks Board carry out, and a 20 minute shark dissection. Durban Botanical Gardens - Durbans Botanical Gardens on the eastern slopes of the Berea ridge offers a herbarium, an orchid house, a Cycad collection, a garden for the blind and a charity tea garden. Umngeni River Bird Park - Designed and built in an old quarry site on the banks of the Umgeni River, just 10 minutes outside Durban, the Umgeni River Bird Park is one of the greatest attractions of the city. Walk-through aviaries, birds out on perches, wonderful green vegetation, some amazing waterfalls and rock faces all combine to make this a very special place to visit. Golden Mile - Flanked by luxury hotels and apartment blocks, the Golden Mile skirts the main beaches and the Indian Ocean. Attractions include an amusement centre, paddling pools, paved walkways, gardens and fountains. Funworld, with its bumper cars, roundabouts and hurdy-gurdy machines, is a firm favourite. Temple of understanding - The Hare Krishna temple, known as the Sri Sri Radhanath Temple of Understanding, is found in the largely Indian area of Chatsworth roughly 20 kilometres south of the city of Durban. Durban enjoys a warm sub-tropical climate. Summers are hot and humid averaging 28° and is the rainy season, whilst the mild winters enjoy an average temperature of 23° and are dry and clear. The climate of KZN is described as all-year-round tourist-friendly. Sea temperatures are also relatively stable, averaging 21 degrees all year, providing possibilities for a diversity of aquatic activities in any season, including diving, fishing, swimming, boating and surfing. |
