East London, affectionately called Buffalo City by the locals, is the second largest city in the province of the Eastern Cape. It is situated 1000 kilometres from Cape town on the South East coast of South Africa. Lying in between the Nahoon River in the north and the Buffalo river to the south it is the only river port in South Africa. The shores are lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and with its sub-tropical climate is a sought after tourist destination for local South Africans and international tourist alike. The South African currency is Rands and cents. Foreign currency can be exchanged at any bank or foreign exchange outlet. Most stores, restaurants and hotels accept credit cards. Banking hours are 09h00 - 15h30 Monday - Friday and Saturdays 08h30 - 11h00. On arrival at the airport, shuttle companies offer transfers to your required destination and taxi's are available. Taxi's are also available from all major hotels. Car rental is also a good option to get around the city. The same standard voltage and frequency as in most European countries, 220/230 Volts at 50Hz even though the type of plugs varies. You can usually borrow an adapter at your hotel. East London Aquarium - East London Aquarium and Whale Viewing Deck - Said to be the oldest aquarium in South Africa. East London Museum - The East London Natural History gallery features the original coelacanth - a prehistoric fish that has lived in the Indian Ocean for 400 million years, thought to be extinct until it was re-discovered in 1938. It also serves as the home of the world's only surviving Dodo egg and a reconstruction of the flightless bird that lived on the island of Mauritius. East London Coast Nature Reserve - a stretch of coast that extends from the Great Kei River in the north east all the way to the Tylomnqa River in the south west. Between these two rivers lies over 3 000 hectares of conservation area made up of ten coastal reserves and two inland state forests, known collectively as the East London Coast Nature Reserve. East London City Hall - The foundation stone of the East London City Hall was laid in 1897. The clock tower commemorates the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. CLIMATE
Situated on the Indian Ocean coast between Cape Town and Durban, East London has a perfect climate with mild, temperate conditions. Summer days hover between 24/28° C, and in winter the temperature seldom drops below the low 20's. |
