George is the sixth oldest town in South Africa, situated in the Western Cape Province. The town is centrally situated: halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth and centre of the Garden Route - it is an ideal spot to explore the areas scenic splendours. Situated on a 10 kilometre plateau between the majestic Outeniqua Mountain to the north and the Indian ocean to the South. Whilst retaining it's small town, country atmosphere, George also has a sophisticated infrastructure. George has many historical landmarks to be visited, like The Slave Tree, an ancient English Oak planted by Landdrost van Kervel. The South African currency is Rands and cents. Foreign currency can be exchanged at any bank or foreign exchange outlet. Most stores, restaurants and hotels accept credit cards. Banking hours are 09h00 - 15h30 Monday - Friday and Saturdays 08h30 - 11h00. On arrival at the airport, shuttle companies offer transfers to your required destination and taxis are available. Taxi's are also available from all major hotels. Car rental is also a good option to get around the city. The same standard voltage and frequency as in most European countries, 220/230 Volts at 50Hz even though the type of plugs varies. You can usually borrow an adapter at your hotel. It is normal to tip golf caddies, taxi drivers, hotel and railway porters, chambermaids, stewards, waiters, barmen and tour guides. The accepted average is 10-15%. ATTRACTIONS
The Old Slave Tree - The dates and facts written up in history , indicates that this tree must be almost 200 years old. The tree was planted by Van Kervel, George's magistrate of the time. Known as the Slave Tree because of the very large chain and lock embedded in the trunk, it has been declared a national monument. George Historical Church Building - This historical Dutch Reformed church is open to the public to visit. Although a historical building, the church is still active and sermons are held every Sunday. Red Berry Farm - The Red Berry Farm is situated just outside George on the road going towards Blanco. The farm lays in a beautiful setting with views of the majestic Outeniqua mountains, north of George. Red Berry Farm is a working berry production farm and it's products are often seen in fresh produce markets of the area. The farm is open to day visitors and here you get the opportunity to experience the picking of your own strawberries. Victoria Bay - Victoria Bay, also known as Vic's Bay is approximately 3km from George and 6km from Wilderness. It has a relaxed beach setting and is almost enclosed by cliffs. There are only a few beachfront cottages literally right on the beach. A number of these cottages are guesthouses. What makes this bay extra special, is the beautiful green lawn where friends and families have picnic There is a lawn ideal for picnics, and the beach is ideal for sunbathing. There is also a hiking trail with good view points. CLIMATE
George, in the heart of the Garden Route has a Mediterranean Maritime climate, with moderately hot summers, and mild to chilly winters. It is one of the richest rainfall areas in South Africa. Most of the rains occurs in the winter months, brought on by the humid sea-winds from the Indian ocean. The summer months of November to March sees daily temperatures of about 24-30ºC. In the winter months, June - August, the days are warm, but temperatures drop in the evenings. |
