The South African currency is Rands and cents. Foreign currency can be exchanged at any bank or foreign exchange outlet. Most stores, restaurants and hotels accept credit cards. Banking hours are 09h00 - 15h30 Monday - Friday and Saturdays 08h30 - 11h00. On arrival at the airport, shuttle companies offer transfers to your required destination and taxis are available. Taxi's are also available from all major hotels. Car rental is also a good option to get around the city. The same standard voltage and frequency as in most European countries, 220/230 Volts at 50Hz even though the type of plugs varies. You can usually borrow an adapter at your hotel. It is normal to tip golf caddies, taxi drivers, hotel and railway porters, chambermaids, stewards, waiters, barmen and tour guides. The accepted average is 10-15%. Apartheid Museum - the city's leading tourist attraction, this museum displays images, recordings and memorabilia depicting life during the apartheid era. Soweto - Soweto is the most populous black urban residential area in the country, it is also the most metropolitan township in the country - setting trends in politics, fashion, music, dance and language. It houses the Nelson Mandela Museum and Hector Pieterson memorial. Gold Mine - Take a tour of an original mine shaft, situated at Gold Reef City. You reach the shaft by descending in a lift 226 metres below ground to view where back in the 1920's gold was mined. Hard hats and torches are provided. Joburg Zoo - Situated in central Parktown, this zoo is home to some impressive animals such as lions, tigers, polar bears, elephants, gorillas and many more. The zoo offers a variety of educational and entertainment programmes. Johannesburg Art Gallery - home to some of the most prized works in the country and world. Cradle of humankind - Maropeng and the Cradle of humankind is a World Heritage Site. Situated about an hours drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria. The Maropeng Visitor Centre is an exciting, world-class exhibition, focusing on the development of humans and our ancestors over the past few million years. This is the birthplace of humanity. Johannesburg enjoys a very favourable climate, dry and sunny all year round. Between October and April the city experiences heavy afternoon thunderstorms with downpours of rain. Temperatures in Johannesburg are usually fairly mild thanks to the city's high altitude, with the average maximum daytime temperature in January of + 22°C, dropping to an average maximum of around + 8°C in June. During the winter, the temperature occasionally drops to below freezing at night time, causing frost. |
