Maputo has been the capital of Mozambique since 1898. The city was previously called Lourenço Marques until the country's independence in 1975. It is the largest city in Mozambique and the country's most important harbour. It is situated at the mouth of the Santo River in the extreme south. In Maputo, you are never far from the coast and visitors to the city can enjoy the refreshing sea breeze at the many restaurants serving locally caught seafood. Along the marginal is the fish market, where you will find fresh fish for the barbeque without all the effort of catching it. Malaria precautions are strongly recommended. Maputo is two hours ahead of GMT and therefore on the same time zone as South Africa. The local currency in Maputo is the Metical. The USD and Rand are widely accepted. It is adviseable to travel with cash as credit cards are not always accepted. Generally business hours are 08h00 - 12h00 and 14h00 - 17h30. The electricity is AC220V and 3 pin plugs are used. The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese. South African passport holders do not require a visa if visiting for non business purposes. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival in Mozambique; passengers must be in possession of onward or return tickets and sufficient funds. ATTRACTIONS

Maputo experiences sunshine and blue skies for most of the year, where temperatures average between 24°C and 27°C along the coast, except during raining season ; December to April, where temperatures can exceed 30°C in some areas. May to November is their cooler and dry and is generally the best time to visit. |
